Colbert Report: One Direction

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ejgq0r0SEU

It takes two minutes and thirty three seconds for Stephen Colbert to satirize and make fun of the famous Irish/British boy band, One Direction. Colbert does not mainly talk about the five boys, but instead targets their number one song, which has won them a variety of awards, "What Makes You Beautiful" and satirizes the lyrics. To him, the song is meaningless and pointless. However, to more than ten million girls all over the world, it is a song that makes them feel beautiful. He begins to isolate and separate the lyrics from each other to show how absurd they actually sound. By using the techniques of sarcasm, verbal irony, and even distortion on the song, he is able to show how the song does not make sense. Colbert talks about this topic with the purpose of bringing common sense with the message to the band's listeners and fans, that the lyrics do not make sense and are foolish. While Colbert may satirize the famous boy band and their song, it is going to take a lot more for him to actually persuade their dedicated fans to not listen to their songs.

  1. I am not a fan of One Direction at all and i do not listen to any of their songs. Stephen Colbert did an amazing job in satirizing their meaningless and complex lyrics that logically do not make sense. I am truly happy that he has the courage to actually point out the flaws of the band. Hopefully this makes people work their common sense and realize that what they are listening to is not the "cutest" and "most amazing" thing on earth. There are many other artists who sing their hearts out to songs that have so much moral and intelligent meaning. This was an interesting post that brought to my attention. Even though I am not a fan of One Direction, i respect those, such as you, who like them because every person has their own opinion, especially when it comes to taste.

  2. It is about time some one took on this topic and showed all the viewers how ridiculous these new bands are. Colbert did an amazing job showing the viewers how stupid and irrelevant One Direction's, songs and lyrics are, which is extremely similar to the kind of music and songs Justin Bieber produces. If all these girls need to listen to this dumb song to make them feel beautiful, then we have a problem. With that said, there is no way this is going to change the mind of the hundreds of thousands of girls that listen to these artists. Sadly, there is nothing that can be done to get some sense into these girls.

  3. For some teens these sort of bands are amazing and they would do anything to meet one direction. But for me they just are not that good, and their music isn't that great either. I do think that teens have a right to worship whoever they like and even though for some their music has no true meaning, does not mean that the band totally sucks. In my opinion Colbert did a good job in making the segment funny and entertaining, and he did come across some valid points, but One Direction should not be judged based on two lines from their song, all he kept commenting on was the fact that those two lines weren't good.

  4. Many teenage girls all across the globe love One Direction and are practically obsessed with them. Stephen Colbert on the other hand, is not. He satirizes their song and calls it meaningless. He proves his point quite well by going through one of their song's lyrics and proving his point. I personally do not like the band either and think teenage girls should watch this episode.

  5. These comments are extremely sad. Every individual has their own taste in music and has the right to defend their favorite band or artist. Although I am not a fan of One Direction, I agree with Rosemary that the band should not be judged based on two lines from one song. However, Colbert did an excellent job on satirizing and establishing the public opinion of this popular boy-band by using verbal irony. Even though there are many haters, One Direction fans should not cease to worship their favorite band.

  7. It was about time that someone stood up and openly expressed their feelings about the absurd lyrics of One Direction. Ten million girls find their music and inspiring but their songs audience is primarily the female gender and that is a negative aspect for their popularity. Because the music only appeals to about half of the general population, it gives room for the other half of the people to sit there and make satirical remarks about them. Stephen Colbert was one of these people. His intention is to make people aware that what they are listening to is an absurd combination of lyrics that when dissected could reveal its true grotesque state. He also wants people to know that the boys singing the song do no mean what they say in their songs to all ten million fans so falling in love with them because because of the subconscious thought that the song is directed to their individual self is honestly foolish. The fans must wake up, step away from their self-righteous thoughts, and take a second to analyze the fact that these celebrities simply do not care about the fans and only show that they do for marketing purposes.

  8. Talar, do not hate me after reading this comment, but I have never been a fan of the boy band, One Direction. Similar to Colbert, I have continuously satirized not only their lyrics, but the five band members as well. Obviously a fan of theirs would go against Colbert for making any of the comments he did, but he is correct. I disagree with Hagop though, with what he said about One Direction being similar to Justin Bieber. Justin was actually able to convert some of his "haters" to fans by releasing an album because he proved he was talented, but One Direction was unable to do this.

  9. Music is a source of entertainment, energy, or just plain relaxation, and I believe that the song by One Direction accomplishes just that. I'm not particularly a fan of the band, but I do not have any hate or dislike directed towards them. I find some of their music enjoyable, but i am quickly amused by the satirical remarks or comments directed towards them. Generally, their music is directed towards a certain age group and gender, which justifies their choice of lyrics. Teenage girls swoon at the references made in One Direction's music, especially relating themselves to the hit song "What Makes You Beautiful." However, it is unjust to say that the band is isolated in their choice of musical messages that they convey through their lyrics. A plentiful number of girls choose sides or teams, between Justin Bieber and One Direction, but I for one do not see the stark difference. Thousands of boys or boy bands begin their musical careers attempting to appeal to teenage girls because they provide a large fan base, but there is no sense in joining one artist's or band's team and sending hate towards another entertainer. Therefore, I do not agree with Preny, because her statement about Justin Bieber's talent is purely opinion and not fact. All musicians have music that is meaningless to one, yet inspiring and motivational to another. Society must learn to respect and nurture all music and accept that any individual will have different thoughts and opinions about specific entertainers and musicians, alike.

  10. Stephen Colbert has satirized the famous British-Irish boy band, One Direction in a hysterical and entertaining way. One Direction is known for singing songs that will make any girl fall in love with their lyrics, regardless of how exaggerated they sound. Colbert has become that satirist that states his mind, offensive or not. He wants society to know that such fairy tales and situations described in songs are taken out of proportion, and in the end, the people that will be hurting will be the millions of fans of their favorite heartthrob. No life is perfect, and followers need to understand that the lyrics can make an individual feel beautiful about themselves, but to no avail. It will shatter one's hopes and dreams of ever having an event that is portrayed in music become true. Colbert sees the truth behind artists, such as One Direction, and his voice on the subject is clearly understood and just.

  11. You tell him, Talar!! Directioners are not going anywhere, no matter how much One Direction's lyrics do not make sense (which of course they do). All that Colbert is trying to do is gain publicity by satirizing today's most popular boy band, even though he is making fun of them. There is no such thing as bad publicity and clearly Colbert is just being a "hater".

  12. I am not a fan of One Direction. In fact, I barely know any of their songs. Therefore, I am indifferent towards this topic. However, when it comes to Colbert's ability of satirizing their image and songs, he did do a rather excellent job at it.
